Amazon Prime Day gains grocery shoppers

Amazon announced that its efforts to attract more grocery shoppers to Prime Day appeared to be working. The announcement came a few days after the company reported that corporate staff members were called on to help pick order items and prep them for delivery in a Brooklyn grocery warehouse.

Numerator, a data analytics firm, reported that 15% of shoppers surveyed said they bought groceries during the first two days of Amazon’s four-day sale, an increase from 13% last year. Overall, four of the top five selling items were in the household essentials and grocery categories.

As for the corporate staff members in Brooklyn, they were asked to work two-hour shifts in an Amazon Fresh warehouse.

“As we have for several years, we invited grocery corporate employees to support particular in-store and fulfillment center teams during Prime Day,” according to an Amazon employee in an email to Supermarket News. The employee added that the work was optional.
