Amazon launches same-day delivery for fresh groceries

David Goodman | Aug 29, 2025 |

Amazon announced earlier this month that customers in more than 1,000 municipalities can order fresh groceries online with same-day delivery, and the company plans to expand to over 2,300 locations across the U.S. by the end of the year.

In most locations, same-day grocery delivery is free to Prime members for orders over $25, and $2.99 otherwise. Non-Prime customers must pay $12.99 per order.

Amazon tested the grocery delivery service in select cities and found that first-time Amazon grocery shoppers using same-day delivery returned to shop twice as often compared to those who didn’t by fresh food. The company reported over $100 billion in gross online grocery sales in the first quarter of 2025.

Walmart still holds a significant edge over Amazon in grocery delivery. A survey conducted by PYMNTS Intelligence reported that nearly 30% of shoppers made their most recent grocery purchase at Walmart, compared to only 1.3% at Amazon.
