Amazon announced that it plans to close four Amazon Fresh stores – all in Southern California – in the coming months. The company had recently announced the closure of four other Amazon Fresh locations in the U.S. and 14 in the U.K. Five others supermarkets are being converted to its Whole Foods banner.
Despite the closings, two new Amazon Fresh stores opened this year, one of which is in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood. The chain had 64 locations in nine states as of September 24, including 27 in California.
Supermarket News stated in an article this week that in the past two years, Amazon said it has opened more than 50 stores across its grocery brands. In addition, in the first half of this year, Amazon’s everyday essentials, which includes groceries and household items, grew nearly twice as fast as all other Amazon categories in the U.S.
