Amazon announced this week that it plans to close all 58 Amazon Fresh and all 16 Amazon Go stores in order to focus on same-day fresh grocery delivery. The company said it will convert some of the stores into Whole Foods Markets and plans to open more than 100 new stores over the next few years.
In the Greater Philadelphia Region, Amazon Fresh stores are located in Willow Grove, Warrington, Broomall, Langhorne, Bensalem, and Philadelphia (Northern Liberties). New Jersey stores include Eatontown, Lodi, Paramus, and Woodland Park.
Amazon still plans to continue testing new physical store experiences, including Amazon Grocery, which launched alongside a Whole Foods store in Chicago, and a store-within-a-store concept like the one at Whole Foods in Plymouth Meeting, PA.
The company also plans to open a supercenter-style retail store near Chicago late next year. At 230,000 square feet, the facility will include groceries, household essentials, and general merchandise, as well as a distribution center for deliveries. And so far Amazon is keeping its convenience offering through its Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, which currently has five locations in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia.
