Wegmans announced last week that it has been testing smart carts – which allow customers to scan items as they shop – in two stores in Rochester, NY and one in Buffalo, NY. And earlier this week the supermarket chain said it is rolling out Instacart’s Caper Carts at one of its Syracuse, NY locations as part of a pilot program.
“Smart shopping carts is an early-stage technology that we believe could be offered to our customers as an alternative way to shop in our stores in the future,” Wegmans said to Supermarket News. “Our goal is to determine if smart cart technology is a fit for the unique shopping assortment offered in our stores and if it meets the shopping needs of our customers.”
