Trader Joe’s, Aldi increasing their hold on grocery shoppers

According to data published by Placer.ai and reported in an article by Grocery Dive, Trader Joe’s and Aldi showed a drop last year in the proportion of customers who went to a competitor right before or after visiting one of their stores. The trend suggests that a growing number of people view the grocers as primary shopping destinations even though they carry a smaller selection of products than traditional supermarkets.

In addition, both chains saw significant year over year increases in foot traffic at their stores in 2024 and into 2025. Visits to Trader Joe’s were up by about 6% in 2024 compared with the previous year, and Aldi visits surged by more than 18%.

Aldi said in February that it plans to open 225 new locations in the U.S. this year, and Trader Joe’s had 12 new stores in its pipeline as of January.
